NeuroCOLT
workshop
on
Reinforcement Learning
Windsor, 12-16 July 2000
Cumberland
Lodge

Summary
Reinforcement learning is one of the most active research areas
in artificial intelligence. In this approach to machine learning,
an agent tries to maximize the total amount of reward it receives
when interacting with a complex and uncertain environment. The
analysis of this scenario is radically different from standard
approaches to supervised learning, as many of the common assumptions
do not hold.
Recent advances in the theoretical analysis of this problem will
be surveyed in a 3 days course by Michael Kearns, followed by
an invited talk byJonathan Baxter and some talks contributed by
the participants in the workshop.
Preparation material for Michael Kearns' course can be found here.
Abstract of Jonathan Baxter's talk can be found here.

Accommodation
Residential
accommodation for the workshop is limited. A maximum of
23 rooms is available on the first two nights, but more are
free thereafter. So it would be possible to stay locally for just
the two nights, and then to move into Cumberland
Lodge
Day
accommodation is less restricted, though there will be some practical
limitations which we may need to look into if demand is really
high.
Registration
As
usual NeuroCOLT participants will have priority, but the invitation
may be broadened subsequently.

Registration Form: Click Here
Priority
registration for NeuroCOLT participants
opens 28 April 2000.
Open invitation for outside participation from 15 May
2000.
Note
The
cost is somewhat more than the NC2 'per diem', but we have agreement
from the Commission that we are allowed to charge 'actuals'
on this occasion.
Cumberland
Lodge have no mechanism for charging individuals, so Royal
Holloway will act as the booking agent. We pay the deposit and
the final account.
Participants'
costs will be deducted from the settlement for the year. (Possibly
the Year 2 account, as the workshop - again with the Commission's
agreement - is the Second Year Application Workshop, although
it actually takes place after the end of the year.)
By
registering you authorize Royal Holloway to make the reservations
for you and to recover relevant costs from your NeuroCOLT2 budget
allocation.
